October Adult Learning

Additional adult learning classes are planned for mid-October and will be noted in the weekly e-blast and on this page.

Talmud Study (in English)—Tuesdays at noon
October 4, 11, 18, 25
CABI Library
For beginners and veterans alike.  We will discuss passages that touch on contemporary concerns, and learn more about the Talmud and why it continues to be the central text of our tradition.  Bring a brown-bag lunch to these weekly sessions.

Torah Trope: How to Chant Torah—Wednesdays 6:40-7:10 pm
October 5, 19, 26 (off on October 12 for Yom Kippur)
Location: Sanctuary
In this class, we will learn how to chant Torah according to the traditional musical cantillation system. Participants who choose will be encouraged to put this skill into practice, leyning (chanting) from the weekly portion during selected Shabbat morning services.  This is recommended for B’nai Mitzvah students.  It is also highly recommended for CABI adult members who are able to read Hebrew phonetically (see prerequisite below).  Rabbi Dan is very eager to build a badly needed communal corps of Torah readers.
Prerequsite: You MUST be able to decode Hebrew proficiently in order to take this class; if you cannot read the Hebrew smoothly, it is too much to take on learning the musical notation.

TESHUVAH: The Path to Renewal—Wednesdays 6:00-7:30 pm
Sept. 14, 21, 28; Oct. 5; Oct. 12 after Yom Kippur morning service
On the patio under the covered entryway
In anticipation of the Days of Awe, CABI will host a series of Adult Education classes about Teshuvah (returning, or figuratively, repentance). At the High Holy Days, we reflect upon our failures and setbacks of the past year. In these sessions, we will discuss ways to recognize and repair the harm we have done to our relationships, to our world, and to our personal wellbeing. We’ll share insights into how we can avoid repeating our mistakes, ease the pain we’ve caused, and make peace with those affected by our selfish or careless acts.
